In his article-memoir Vasyl Martynov recalls meeting Volodymyr
Ivasiuk backstage at the Lviv Circus in 1977, after which they
became friends for two years, until the poet's tragic death.
Throughout all the years since his death Martynov planned to
write a song about the composer. One night, he recalls, a strange
thing happened: he began composing a song about Volodia in
his sleep. At two o'clock in the morning he got up and wrote down
the words to a song called "Chebretsevyi lehit" [Gentle breeze of
wild thyme], which his friend the composer Valerii Kvasnevsky
set to music. Martynov recorded the song on a cassette and
brought it to Ivasiuk's sister Halyna. There he met Volodymyr
Ivasiuk's namesake, his nephew Volodia, who is the spitting
image of his famous and unforgettable uncle.
