History St.Michael's Contacts Bienvenue Welcome - Ukrainian

Dear Parishioners, Former Parishioners, Families & Friends,

St. Michael’s the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church celebrated its centennial on October 29-30, 2011. As we reached this milestone, regardless of whether we are current or past parishioners, or friends of St. Michael’s Parish, our reflections will remind us of years past when we, our parents or grandparents immigrated to Canada from Ukraine, to begin new lives and establish new roots. St. Michael’s Church, St.Michael's Potifical Massthe first Ukrainian Catholic parish in Quebec, was founded in 1911, as the result of an official visit to Canada by our famous Metropolitan, Servant-of-God Andrey Sheptytsky.

On October 29th and 30st, 2011, St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Parish held two events to officially celebrate its centennial. On Saturday, October 29th, formal centennial celebrations began with a very successful banquet supper held at the reception hall Le Rizz: 6630 Jarry East, St. Leonard, QC H1P 1W3.

On Sunday October the 30st at 10: 00 a.m., a Pontifical Divine Liturgy was celebrated by our bishop Stephen Chmilar and invited clergy. The unveiling of a memorial plaque also took place following the service along with a group photograph. We will keep you informed about further events through the upcoming year on our website: http://www.ukemonde.com/stmichael as well as “Ukrainian Time” broadcasts.

Dear friends!

Our parish of St. Michael the Archangel celebrated its one hundredth anniversary.

Father IhorThe parish was established as a result of the spiritual needs of the first Ukrainian immigrants to Canada. These needs were perceived through the pastoral wisdom of our great metropolitan, the Servant of God Andrey Sheptytsky, when he visited Montreal in 1910.

The centennial history of St-Michael’s parish is the story of each individual parishioner, as well as the story of the development of our entire Ukrainian community in Montreal. On the pages of this history we find such illustrious names as the above-mentioned Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, Hetmanych Danylo Skoropadsky, Rev. Julian Katriy OSBM, Rev. Josaphat Jean OSBM, His Beatitude Patriarch Josyf Slipyj, His Beatitude Lubomyr Huzar and others.

This history was written by the lives of the first wave of Ukrainian immigrants, to be later interwoven with the fate of families of internees during the war years of 1914 - 1918. It evolved with the second wave of immigrants whose lot was to arrive during the years of the Great Depression of the 1930’s. The history of the parish was expanded by the arrival of the third wave of settlers who came here as refugees, driven from their homeland, due to military conflicts of the Second World War.

To remember, honor and further develop the pages of this history is now the obligation of those, who belong to the most recent wave of immigrants, as well as of those, who for generations have deep-seated roots in the Canadian soil.

Many important events were planned in preparation for the 100th anniversary: a memorial plaque was placed on the facade of our church; a Jubilee Centennial Book was published; a commemorative Divine Liturgy was celebrated; as well as a very successful banquet was held; an exposition of photos and documents depicting the history of our parish was also exibited.

By celebrating this 100th anniversary we have set before us the following goals: to become more familiar with our roots; to redefine our true identity and retrieve that which was lost; to reactivate our spirituality and to transmit our heritage to the next generation. We have a one-hundred-year-old history and it should be continued.

We thank everyone who joined us in our festivities by placing an offering upon the altar of our ancestral parish of St. Michael’s.
